To Drano, or not to Drano, that is the question.

DREADED DRAIN CLEANERS

DIY DRAIN CLEANING & WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA

We’ve all been there: You start your shower, sink, tub, and instead of flowing down the drain it’s backing up again. Like any non-plumber, your first inkling is to reach for that thick (too many chemicals to mention) drain cleaner. It gets the job done quickly, right? But what is it actually doing to your pipes?

HERE’S THE SKINNY ON THOSE “SAFE ON YOUR PIPES” DRAIN CLEANERS:

What those drain cleaners fail to mention is the damage it’s causing to your pipes. Drain cleaners sit in your pipes until the clog dissolves, continually reacting and generating heat. Over time PVC pipes can soften and eventually break. Old, corroded pipes can be easily damaged, and those drain cleaners can quickly eat away at the glue holding pipes together.

IF YOU’RE A DIY GUY TILL YOU DIE:

Not going to lie, I am the NUMBER ONE OFFENDER when it comes to DIY quick fixes Here are some helpful tips on how to keep up with pipe maintenance without reaching for those harsh chemicals.

1. Hot Water: Pour a large pot of very hot (but not boiling) water down the drain you’re having issues with or want to clean. Follow it up with some cool water to flush out the clogs you just melted away.

2. Baking Soda and Vinegar: Pour half a cup of baking soda down your drain and chase it with half a cup of vinegar. Plug the sink and let it sit overnight. Flush the drains with hot water. We recommend you do this technique once a month!

STILL STUCK WITH THE CLOG FROM HELL?

Step away from the drain cleaners…It’s time to bring out the big guns!

Snake or an Auger: A plumber’s snake or auger is a tool used to break up clogs in pipes. There are different types, but the general idea is that you feed the snake’s thick wire or cable through the drain pipe and turn a handle that keeps the snake spinning inside the pipe. Once the auger hooks onto the clog, you can pull it out and discard the mess.
