How it works

How your septic system works

Four stages, working together. When one is off, you notice it fast.

1

Waste leaves the home

Everything from your drains and toilets flows out to the septic tank.

2

Solids settle

In the tank, solids settle and naturally occurring bacteria break them down.

3

Liquid flows out

The clarified liquid flows to the drain field and filters through the soil.

4

Maintenance keeps it flowing

Regular pumping and inspections keep the whole system healthy for decades.

Catch it early

Signs your septic needs attention

Septic problems rarely fix themselves. Spot these early and a repair is far cheaper than a replacement.

Slow drains and toilets

When multiple drains slow down at once, the tank or field may be backing up.

Sewage backups

Sewage coming back into the lowest drains or toilets needs attention right away.

Foul odors

Sewage smells in the yard or home often point to a full tank or a failing field.

Unusually green or spongy grass

Bright green, lush, or soggy grass over the tank or field can mean liquid is surfacing.

Standing water near the field

Wet spots or pooling over the drain field signal the system is not absorbing properly.

Gurgling in the plumbing

Gurgling in the plumbing

Noticing the signs? Catch it before it spreads.

Repair or replace

From a quick fix to a full replacement

Some septic problems are a straightforward repair, a baffle, a line, a section of field. Others mean the system has reached the end of its life. We give you an honest recommendation either way, and when it is time for a new system, we install it with traditional or trenchless methods that protect your yard.

  • Traditional and trenchless replacement options
  • Drain field repair and full replacement
  • Honest repair-versus-replace guidance, no pressure
Built for septic homes

Why this matters here

Many homes around Clarksburg, Damascus, Poolesville, and the rural edges of Montgomery and Frederick County run on septic instead of public sewer. There is no city system to fall back on, so a little upkeep protects your home, your yard, and a very expensive piece of infrastructure.

  • Have the system inspected every 1 to 3 years
  • Pump the tank every 3 to 5 years depending on use
  • Keep wipes, grease, and chemicals out of the drains
  • Keep heavy vehicles off the drain field

The people in your yard

A crew you are glad to let in

Septic work is messy, technical, and best left to people who know it. Every technician is part of our own trained, background checked team, not a subcontractor, and we leave your yard as close to how we found it as possible.

Absolute best plumbers I have ever used. Needed them a few times recently and each time they were so professional, kind and resolved each problem the first time around. This last issue took them several hours to fix. They explained everything along the way and gave a very fair price for a lot of work. They also work very cleanly! I will never use another plumber!

I needed a water valve installed for my new fridge and a new faucet installed in upstairs bathroom. Seth was amazing. He came out and really listened to me and my concerns. We even called the company that was going to deliver my new fridge so he would have a better understanding of what he needed to do his job. It made me feel at ease with the whole process. He is even coming back later in the week to install new fridge once it’s delivered. I will absolutely call them again.

We had a pinhole leak suddenly appear in our outdoor hose bib, and Clarksburg Plumbing was able to provide next-day service, which we really appreciated. Our technician, John Brown, arrived right on time after giving us a 30-minute courtesy call. John quickly diagnosed the problem, explained everything clearly, and provided an accurate assessment of what needed to be done. He completed the repair in under two hours, and the quality of his work was excellent. Before leaving, he even took the time to share some helpful tips on how to prevent similar issues in the future. John was friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and efficient from start to finish. We couldn’t have asked for a better service experience. I highly recommend Clarksburg Plumbing and especially John Brown for anyone needing reliable, high-quality plumbing work.

Cris and Franklin from Clarksburg Plumbing did incredible work at our home fixing an underground water service leak. They encountered complications but went to plan B efficiently and skillfully and got the job done well and in a timely manner. They also answered all our questions patiently and taught us a lot of why they made the decisions they made. We are very pleased with their work and plan to recommend them and all of Clarksburg Plumbing to our friends and neighbors.

Septic system FAQ

Straight answers to what septic homeowners ask us most.

Common signs include slow draining sinks and toilets, sewage backups, foul odors, unusually green grass near the septic tank area, and standing water or wet spots around the drain field.

Have your system inspected every 1 to 3 years and pumped every 3 to 5 years, depending on usage and the size of the tank.

Septic repair often requires professional expertise due to the complexity of the system and potential health risks. It is best to hire a qualified septic provider like Clarksburg Plumbing for repairs and maintenance.

Repair fixes specific issues within the existing system, such as leaks or blockages. Replacement means installing a new system, usually because the old one has failed or is beyond repair.

With proper maintenance, a septic system can last 20 to 30 years or more. The lifespan varies based on design, usage, and how well it is maintained.

Regular pumping and inspections, careful water use, avoiding flushing non-biodegradable items, and keeping heavy vehicles off the drain field can all significantly extend the life of your system.
